Uniform Cell Distribution Achieved by Using Cell Deformation in a Micropillar Array

چکیده
The uniform dispersion of cells in a microchamber is important to reproduce results in cellular research. However, achieving this is difficult owing to the laminar flow caused by the small dimensions of such a chamber. In this study, we propose a technique to achieve a uniform distribution of cells using a micropillar array inside a microchamber. The cells deform when they pass through a gap between the micropillars. The deformation causes a repetitive clog-and-release process of cells at the gaps between the micropillars. The micropillar array generates random flow inside the microchamber, resulting in the uniform distribution of the cells via cell accumulation. In the experiment, the distribution of cells in the microchamber with the micropillar array is uniform from end to end, whereas that in the microchamber without the micropillar array is centered. The deviation of the cell distribution from the ideally uniform distribution in the microchamber with the micropillar array is suppressed by 63% compared with that in the microchamber without the micropillar array. The doubling time of the cells passed through the micropillar array did not change relative to that of normal N87 cells. This technique will be helpful for reproducing results in cellular research at the micro scale or for those using microfluidic devices. OPEN ACCESS Micromachines 2015, 6 410

Developed endplate geometry for uniform contact pressure distribution over PEMFC active area
Contact resistance among the components of a polymer exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has a crucial effect on cell performance. The geometry of the endplate plays an essential role in the contact pressure distribution over the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and the amount of contact resistance between plates. In this work, the effects of endplate geometry on the contact pressure distribut...

In the present investigation, two dimensional elastoplastic finite element analysis was conducted to assess the deformation characteristics of Al 1100 alloy during continuous confined strip shearing (C2S2) process. The results of simulations showed that the plastic strain distribution across the deformed sample is non-uniform irrespective of the amount of friction and C2S2 die angle. The most u...

متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Non-Uniform Gas Diffusion Layer Porosity Effect on Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Performance
Gas diffusion layers are essential components of proton exchange membrane fuel cell since the reactants should pass through these layers. Mass transport in these layers is highly dependent on porosity. Many of simulations have assumed, for simplicity, the porosity of GDL is constant, but in practice, there is a considerable variation in porosity along gas diffusion layers. In the present study ...
